Communication and Scientific Culture in Marine Sciences

About This Course

This course, promoted by the Marine Sciences Program of Galicia, is aimed at strengthening the communication skills of researchers and technical staff through practical tools and strategic approaches tailored to the current challenges of scientific communication. The training combines online modules with an intensive face-to-face workshop and includes the option to develop a personal communication project with individual feedback. The course will be delivered by Joanne Sweeney, international consultant and leading expert in public sector digital communication, and CEO of the Public Sector Marketing Institute. Through an innovative, applied approach, participants will learn to develop effective narratives, use digital media with purpose, and adapt scientific communication to new social and technological contexts.

Course Staff

Joanne Sweeney

Joanne Sweeney is the CEO of the Public Sector Marketing Institute and a consultant specializing in digital communications. She is the author of three books, a podcaster, speaker, and digital marketing professional focused on the public sector. For the past six years, she has worked with the commercial radio sector, delivering customized training on all aspects of digital marketing, social media, and online sales. Joanne collaborates with journalists, presenters, station CEOs, and sales teams to help them build confidence and competence in the online world.


This course is organized by the Galician Marine Sciences Program, whose objective is to improve the resilience and sustainable management of Galician marine ecosystems and resources, promote sustainability and innovation in the fishing and aquaculture sector, and enhance the transfer of knowledge to the socioeconomic network linked to the sea.

It has a total budget of ten million euros, of which six million come from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, through the state's Next Generation funds, and the other four million are contributed by the Regional Government of Galicia, through the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the new European Maritime, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF). Its scientific network is made up of nearly four hundred researchers from the three Galician universities—A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, and Vigo—four centers affiliated with the CSIC, and six centers in the community, including the Galician Supercomputing Center (CESGA), the Sea Technology Center-Cetmar Foundation, the Marine Research Center (CIMA), the Galician Institute for Aquaculture Training (Igafa), the Technological Institute for the Control of the Marine Environment of Galicia (Intecmar), and Meteogalicia.
